Welcome to the February 2007 round up of news and views on UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles, ghosts, the paranormal, the unexplained, the weird and the wonderful.

UFO At Chicago O'Hare Airport

2007 started with a big UFO story. The sighting itself occurred on 7 November but the story only emerged later, when the story was carried by mainstream newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune. Several workers at O'Hare airport in Chicago spotted a UFO at about 4.30pm, shortly before sunset. They described the object as being grey and disc shaped. The witnesses said it hovered for several minutes before shooting off at high speed. A particularly striking feature of the sighting was that the object departed with such speed that it apparently punched a hole in the cloud cover, at a height of around 2000 feet. There are around a dozen witnesses and some have expressed concern that neither the Federal Aviation Administration nor the Government appear to be taking the claims seriously. The witnesses are particularly worried that the object could have interfered with air traffic control radars or even posed a collision hazard. An FAA spokeswoman attributed the sightings to a weather phenomenon and said that no further investigation would take place.

Beyond Magazine

Issue three of Beyond magazine is now available and contains features on Atlantis, dowsing, Bigfoot, Stonehenge and much more besides. This new magazine is proving hugely popular and ufologists have welcomed the fact that a newsstand magazine is carrying serious in-depth features on UFOs, which have been in short supply since UFO Magazine ceased publication in 2004. Issue three contains a three page interview feature about my UFO investigations at the MOD and my resignation from the Department last year. I will be writing a regular column for the magazine from Issue four onwards. Issue four goes on sale on 22 February and will carry major features on Roswell, remote viewing, UFO imagery in art and the hunt for the Mongolian Death Worm. Check out www.beyondthemagazine.com for details of this exciting new publication, look for it in W H Smith, Borders and other main newsagents, or take out a subscription at their website.

China Shoots Down Satellite

Fears of an arms race in space grew when China recently used a ballistic missile to bring down one of its old weather satellites, at a height of over 500 miles above the Earth. It was the first such interception for 20 years, as both the USA and Russia have now discontinued the practice due to fears that debris could damage other satellites. China has a major space programme and in response to concerns about the test, stated that it remains committed to the peaceful use of space.

UFO And Paranormal DVDs

Author and researcher Philip Gardiner is a leading authority on a vast range of esoteric subjects, including Freemasons, the Templars and the Illuminati. In a new venture he has teamed up with Reality Films to make a series of DVDs covering strange mysteries and paranormal phenomena. I recorded an interview last year, shortly after my resignation from the MOD, and the resultant DVD covers a wide range of material on UFOs, from Roswell to Rendlesham, from Black Projects to Project Condign. Contact [email protected] for details of how to get a first edition of this DVD, putting Nick Pope in the header. Also, check out www.gardinersworld.com for more information on Philip and his work.

Fastest Ever Spacecraft Heads For Pluto

Just over a year after its launch, the NASA spacecraft New Horizons has passed Jupiter, en route to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. The probe will use the slingshot effect to accelerate to 52,000 miles per hour, the fastest ever speed attained by a spacecraft. It is expected to reach Pluto - which lost its status as a planet last year - in 2015.

Paris Lecture

On 6 March I shall be in Paris, giving a presentation on UFOs, the RAF and the British Government. I am the latest in a long line of people to be invited to the prestigious Repas Ufologiques events organised by GĂ©rard Lebat, and this is a welcome opportunity to discuss British ufology with French researchers and media. I have only recently returned from Athens, where I was interviewed on a television show, so contrary to the popular view, there is certainly plenty of interest in UFOs outside Britain and America. Other European conferences and lectures are in the pipeline, including one in Copenhagen later this year. Check out www.les-repas-ufologiques.com for details of the Parisian event.

The Cosford Incident

On 1 November last year Channel Five broadcast an investigative documentary entitled The British UFO Mystery, focusing on a wave of sightings from March 1993 when a vast triangular shaped craft flew over large parts of the UK, including the military bases RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury. Following broadcast of this documentary, over 30 new witnesses have come forward with accounts of how they too saw the UFO, either on the same night or at a different time. The British UFO Research Association are now investigating many of these sightings. In a related development, the interest generated by the documentary led the Ministry of Defence to publish the casefile on their website. The casefile runs to over 100 documents and has been published as part of the Disclosure Log in the Freedom of Information section of the website. See www.mod.uk for the documents.
