LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome friends to our OCTOBER issue, and wow, Mark, our music Ed is right, it’s almost Christmas. Now starting next month we will be featuring ‘BEST CHRISTMAS BUYS’ our new shopping section right here on SPOTLIGHT. So watch this space for unusual and gorgeous Christmas gifts – and where to shop for them.

It is with much sadness that I report the death of Dr John Mack. Dr Mack, an American friend, was in England to lecture on T.E. Lawrence "Lawrence of Arabia" at the T. E. Lawrence Society Symposium, Oxford. Dr Mack's 1977 biography of T.E. Lawrence, A Prince of Our Disorder, received the Pulitzer Prize in biography. He was on his way home from a dinner with friends in London on Monday evening 27 September, when he was struck down by a vehicle – the driver is alleged to have been drunk. Apparently Dr Mack was pronounced dead at the scene by police officers. He leaves three sons, two grandsons, his former wife, and many friends who loved him dearly. It was only in 2002 that Nick Pope and I spent a pleasant weekend in his company when all three of us were speakers at a conference at Leeds University on the subject of UFOs. We all met up again in London where I introduced John to Steve Norris (who should have been Mayor of London) when we bumped into him in a Knightsbridge hotel, where John was staying and Steve was entertaining. They got on very well, both very charming gents. And although Steve was shy about discussing UFOs, his attractive female guests were true believers. I shall always think of John Mack as ‘The Quiet American’.

Further information will be posted to the John E Mack Institute website www.johnemackinstitute.org The John E Mack Institute, recently named in his honour, honours Dr Mack's courageous examination of human experiences and his landmark explorations of the ways in which perceptions and beliefs about reality shape the human condition. A professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, he was considered to be a leading authority on the spiritual or transformational affects of alleged alien encounter experiences. Mack received his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School He was a graduate of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and was Board certified in child and adult psychoanalysis. On a lighter note I must announce a newcomer to the HG, Livsey, who will be writing the social column whilst Regina sails the med with her latest flame. How does she do it? Livsey is a producer and has his own radio show…he’s a riot so I know you’ll love his page…pop along and see what he has to say.

I was amazed to see socialite Dave West looking very cool and I raved about his designer style which he sported at a party I held last month at Joseph’s in Knightsbridge. I now know the story (read about it in Sally’s fashion page) WOW Dave, you really do look glam in that suit, I can’t wait to see the TV documentary about your lifestyle! And talking of doc’s, our Jacquieline (Crime Page) is busy filming for one of those. Read all about the terrorists etc.

Thanks to Mark (our music Ed who has readers in Timbuktu) for the lovely cover, and what a nice page he writes too. And for real glamour celebrity style check out Joe’s Celebrity page for news and gossip from the Venice Film Festival and pics of your favourite stars.

Until next month, regards Georgina
